I took my foot off the gas and pulled the car over to the shoulder, keeping it in the shadow of a tall building. There was no point in just driving blindly. I had to think of something or we were both dead.
Although I had told Brianna that I was going to drive to a safe-house, I said it more to comfort her than anything else, because I had no idea where the nearest safe-house was and the ever brightening eastern sky told me that even if I did know, there was no slightest chance I could get there before the sun destroyed me.
For the moment the skyscrapers of downtown LA were casting long shadows across the freeway, but they were not a wall and it would not be long before bright claws of deadly sunlight would be tearing us apart.
Then it came to me – the freeway went through a tunnel between here and Pasadena. If we could make it into the tunnel that would give us some time to figure out a next step.
I got back onto the sparsely populated freeway and was about to floor the gas when a shaft of sunlight shot across the road in front of us. I covered my eyes against the glare and slowed down. I could feel the back of my hand start to burn. There was no way I could drive through that without becoming barbecued Vampire.
I took a deep breath. There was no choice. I had to drive through the light.
Squinting against the glare, I aimed the car at where I thought the tunnel began. Holding onto the wheel I lent over as far as I could so my exposed face and hair would be in the shadow of the door. It was not an easy position for driving but I pressed down on the gas and held the wheel as steady as I could.
The car sped forward.
The light burst through the window.
I could smell burning flesh as the light attacked my hands.
The pain was excruciating and I let out a scream, but it did not good the burning continued.
If this didn’t stop in the next few seconds then my hands would be scorched away and our chances of survival would be nill.
